Legal Advocacy

The Legal Advocacy program was started in the spring of 1998 with grant money obtained under the federal Violence Against Women Act. The Women's Resources Legal Advocacy Program's goal is to provide information, referrals and support to victims, information about the law, legal options, services and resources for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with individuals and the community at large. The goal is to enhance the safety, autonomy and economic viability of victims, and to provide accurate information about legal options that will help program participants to assess what course of action they wish to take.
The Legal Advocacy Office is conveniently located across from the Monroe County Courthouse at 30 N. 7th Street, 2nd floor, by appointment only.

The Legal Advocates:

  • provide support and information, and helps victims to identify their options
  • assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to reconstruct their experience, identify legal options, and prepare for court or other meetings with members of the legal system
  • provide accompaniment to court appearances and other meetings
  • prepare victims for working with attorneys, and helps prepare victims to speak more effectively with attorneys
  • assist with safety planning
  • provide systems advocacy with law enforcement, prosecution, and within the medical community
