Youth Outreach

In May 1998, Women's Resources developed a youth volunteer/activist group, S.T.O.P. Abuse (Students Together for Outreach and Prevention of Abuse), to increase awareness of relationship violence. STOP is a dynamic group of Monroe County HS student volunteers who are dedicated to ending relationship violence. STOP was formed as a teen advisory board to Women's Resources. Since its inception, the group has participated in various community activities, fundraising events and recorded a public service announcement. STOP has also brought its issues and concerns into an open forum at the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV) and at the Roundtable Discussion in Harrisburg.
Some members of STOP have completed a peer educator training course, which allows them to act as student experts on relationship violence. The Youth Outreach Advocate from Women's Resources supervises the peer educators group. Through this program, peer educators conduct interactive activity-based education and awareness programs to middle and high school students in Monroe County. To date, the STOP Abuse Peer Educators have conducted fourteen programs in area high schools. They represented Women's Resources at the annual United Way kick-off event, participated in a television forum on teen relationship violence and distribute teen safety and prevention education materials throughout the county.
STOP member's meet weekly to provide support for its members and a forum for youth to develop and conduct awareness initiatives. STOP Abuse meets Thursday evenings, 7PM, at the Hughes Library in Stroudsburg. All Monroe County high school students are welcome and encouraged to attend.
